Real answer: depends on your use case

WordPress vs Webflow:
Category by category.

We've built hundreds of sites on both. Here's what actually matters in practice.

Flexibility

Flexibility & Customization

WordPress wins. WordPress is open-source — you can build literally anything. Custom plugins, custom database tables, custom REST endpoints, custom post types, WooCommerce extensions. There are no platform limits. Webflow is powerful within its designer but hits a ceiling with complex logic, server-side processing, and database-driven applications. Custom code in Webflow is possible but layered on top of a visual system — not the foundation.

  • WordPress: unlimited — custom plugins, themes, endpoints
  • Webflow: powerful UI but limited server-side logic
  • Winner for complex apps: WordPress
  • Winner for marketing sites: Webflow
SEO

SEO Performance

Both are strong. WordPress with Yoast/RankMath gives you deep SEO control. Webflow's built-in SEO tools are excellent for marketing sites with less technical overhead. For content-heavy sites, WordPress wins on plugin ecosystem. For faster page speed out of the box, Webflow often wins — less plugin bloat.

Cost

Total Cost of Ownership

Depends on scale. WordPress is free but requires hosting ($20–$300/mo on managed hosting). Webflow is $23–$212/mo hosted. At small scale, Webflow is cheaper — no server bills or maintenance. At scale, WordPress wins — you own the infrastructure and aren't bound by plan limits.

Build Speed

Development Speed

Webflow wins for marketing sites. Design-to-live in Webflow is faster for standard marketing pages — no theme setup, hosting config, or plugin installation. WordPress is faster for complex custom applications where you need full server-side control from day one.

Ecommerce

Ecommerce

WordPress/WooCommerce wins for complex stores. Webflow has basic ecommerce but it's limited — no subscriptions, limited B2B, no complex pricing rules. For serious ecommerce, use WooCommerce or Shopify, not Webflow Commerce.

CMS

Content Management

WordPress wins on depth; Webflow wins on simplicity. WordPress CMS is endlessly flexible with custom post types, ACF fields, and Gutenberg. Webflow CMS is elegant and fast for editorial teams — 100 collection limit on standard plans is the key constraint.

Choose WordPress when…
Choose Webflow when…

Choose WordPress when you need:

Custom plugin development, WooCommerce, complex server-side logic, REST API backend, multisite networks, deep third-party integrations, or an existing WordPress investment to protect.

Choose Webflow when you need:

A high-quality marketing site, fast time-to-live, pixel-perfect design control, a non-technical team managing content, or a site where design consistency is more important than custom functionality.

Consider both when you need:

A marketing site (Webflow) with a separate backend or API (WordPress/custom) — a hybrid architecture we implement regularly for companies that want the best of both worlds.
